Outstanding Graduate Mentor

Nominations are due March 28, 2008 by 5:00pm at the Grad School Office (Admin 411) or via email to ebmccart AT mtu.edu. Please use MS Word or PDF when submitting over email.

Guidelines:
Any graduate student enrolled during 2007-08 may submit a 1-2 page nomination of the faculty member they believe best exemplifies the following criteria:

  1. Modeling:
    Demonstrates collegial and professional excellence by advocating collaboration, inter-disciplinary communication, and willingness to share credit for co-ventures with the students they work with.
  2. Availability:
    Regularly makes himself/herself available to students even while away from campus, e.g., on sabbatical.
  3. Advocacy:
    Actively advocates for students s/he advises and for graduate students in general. This may involve such matters of climate, support, professional development, and academic opportunity.
  4. Creativity:
    Works with student to find directions for academic pursuit that match both the student's interests and real world availability of post-graduation employment and/or plans the student may have.
  5. Listening:
    Listens to students' concerns and interests first, then engages in identifying options.
  6. Awareness:
    Actively works to stay abreast of current disciplinary trends and opportunities, both inside and outside of the academy.

Graduate Student Recognition Awards

Guidelines:
Nominations for each award require a description of no more than two pages of how the nominee has excelled in the respective activities. Nominees must have been enrolled in graduate school at MTU during the 2007-08 school year. Self nominations will not be accepted, but all others are welcome. Advisors are highly encouraged to nominate their students for these awards.

  1. Exceptional Graduate Student Scholar
    This award is bestowed upon the graduate student who has best excelled in academic pursuits. Nominees will be evaluated upon their performance in the classroom and there contributions to research activities, publications, presentations, and other scholarly works.
  2. Exceptional Graduate Student Leader
    This award is bestowed upon the graduate student who has best exemplified the qualities of an exceptional leader. In order to be eligible, nominees should have participated in activities external to the requirements of their degree. Nominations should include the level of extra-curricular involvement, any official offices held, and what makes the nominees leadership worthy of recognition.

This GSC supports diversity and acts as an advocate for all graduate students at Michigan Tech regardless of race, gender, class, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, learning or physical ability.
